Worthwhile new use for closed Adelaide care home

A shuttered aged care home in South Australia will receive a new lease on life, with its owners repurposing it to provide temporary accommodation for NDIS participants transitioning out of hospital.

UnitingSA’s 24-bed Regency Green home in Regency Park, Adelaide, was closed in May, but will be used to help ease the pressure on SA hospitals by housing discharge-ready NDIS participants who are currently “stranded” in hospital beds; they will be looked after by disability service provider Community Living Options.

According to UnitingSA Chief Executive Jenny Hall, the organisation is well-placed to help the vulnerable in South Australia, including Afghan and Ukrainian refugees in coming weeks.

“Repurposing this former aged care home will help bridge the gap for NDIS participants who need support while permanent housing is secured.

“It’s an ideal solution to help free up these vital hospital beds as the State continues to respond to the current wave of COVID-19 and influenza cases. In future, it will also provide vital accommodation to refugees trying to make a new start in Australia,” she said.
